Twitter, Shoes, Life and Loss

I'm twittering. Anyone else twitter? I don't know how long I'll do it but I started it just to understand what the hype was all about. It's kinda fun, like a group chat sort of thing. seegirlrun is me, of course.

Shoes? Need new ones. Currently running in Mizuno Alchemy 8's. I loved them until they wore out. I'm thinking about the Mizuno Inspires - they feel awesome from the get-go. But I can't decide which philosophy to follow in terms of shoes:
  1. I need light stability shoes ($100)
  2. I'm a fore-foot runner so I need good cushioning in the midfoot, forget the rest. ($36)
  3. I should be running in as basic a shoe as possible (Chirunning, Pose, etc.) ($50)
What if I pick wrong and end up injured? According to the barefoot running philosophy, the more technical shoes are the more likely you are to be injured. You need to run as God intended. I would, of course, wear something to protect my pigs from rocks, hot asphalt, glass and the like. But how extreme to go? And I can't afford to spend too much on shoes. There's just too much going on right now.

OK, the worst part is that my mom has stage 3 adenocarcinoma with cancerous pleural effusion. According to my research, if treated, she has a 50/50 chance of 13 months. Unless there's a miracle or something. I'm scared. I think I'll think about shoes some more.

I'm Learning

Haven't smoked in 5 days. My cough is going away and I'm sleeping through the night again. My IQ must be going up, too. You'd think I'd know better than to even pick one up after the pain of quitting 2 years ago. Geez! At least I'm on the right track again.

I ran when I was in Northern Kentucky visiting my parents. The loop I ran was 5.24 miles and I ran it sans mp3 player. (I've been doing that a lot lately since I lost the BudFits for my iPhone. I ordered a new pair and they were waiting on me when I got back. Better late than never!) The run was beautiful - a little warm but not too bad if the breeze was blowing. It was also fun to see the changes that had occurred since my last visit, which was some time ago.

Yes, if you look closely, you'll see that part of my run was on Turkeyfoot Rd. I went to Dixie Heights High School (the Colonels.) I went to Turkeyfoot Junior High, Buttermilk Pike is a highly traveled road nearby. I know, I know.

I also needed to get that run in because according to my scale, I gained 5 pounds during my 3-day visit. WTH?

OK, so I did have Mrs. Richardson's Butterscotch Carmel Sauce on a spoon more than once and in my iced coffee and on my chocolate raspberry ice cream.

I also had Skyline Chili, a Mett(wurst) and a Bratt(wurst) - oh, and a ton of Goetta , a German sort of oat/sausage thing made in the Cincinnati area that comes in a roll like sausage and you slice and fry like sausage but it's better than sausage. I never realized how many foods I ate were difficult to find outside the Greater Cincinnati Area!

And I had Sam Adams....and wine. And eggs straight from my sister. Straight from my sister's chickens, I mean. Freakishly bright yellow yolks but tasty.

I didn't think I was eating that much but it's either that or I'm swollen all over? Yeah, right. I'll go with that one. I'm just swollen.

You can bet I'll be running today....

I Am An Idiot

It's been awhile.
It's been too hot to run. But I've made peace with the treadmill. I'm not running as much as I should but I think I'm starting to pick it up again.
One of the reasons I've been running less is because of the heat and because I started smoking again. I Am An Idiot. My lungs hurt. I cough. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
And, my mom was diagnosed with lung cancer yesterday. She quit smoking some 30 years ago. Guess what I did when I got off the phone with her? Lit on up. I Am An Idiot.
I'm flying home on Saturday and I'll be back on Monday. I think I'll toss the cigs in the trash at the airport.
